Stripping the surface is our 4th exhibition. The collaboration was born out of a common interest in the notion of a surface and what is hidden beneath; the relationship between an exterior and interior. The first exhibition took place in 2015, where cracks became a symbolic motif for the impermanent.  Over the years our shared interest for the surface has left the wall and moved closer to the body, in different ways, but parallel to eachother.

Sikorska is inspired by the inside of the body, both visually and psychologically. In her latest works she is exploring techniques of reduction. By drawing with a scalpel on scratchboard or carving out intricate sculptures from blocks of clay, she searches for inner movements, a kind of essence.

The relation to the body in Appelberg’s work has become clothing. Inspired by both contemporary avant-garde fashion and biblical scenes from Renaissance paintings, he depicts fabric and drapery, focusing on how they relate to the body. (...) Appelberg mainly works with painting, but more recent works also include 3D printed sculptures and cyanotypes.
